Barbra Streisand Collection: (What's Up, Doc? / The Main Event / Up the Sandbox / Nuts)

What's Up, Doc? (1972) is a hilarious romp through the world of screwball comedy, with Barbra Streisand shining as a charming flake who distracts a self-absorbed musicologist (Ryan O'Neal).

Director Peter Bogdanovich pays loving tribute to classic comedies of the 1930s, and the result is a smile-inducing, if not consistently inspired or funny, film. Up the Sandbox (1972) is a less successful but still intriguing effort from the early 1970s, starring Streisand as a stay-at-home mom feeling the strain of her narrow life.

Her fantasies of escape are both over-the-top and subtle, making for a complex portrait of her psyche. The Main Event (1979) is a comedic misfire from the mid-1970s that attempts to bottle the same light as earlier Streisand films but falls short.
