Just place it over the ball and it securely picks it up. Unit is very well made and sturdy so even a 12 to 15" range is very doable. It is a bit on the heavy side but that's what make it more sturdy compared to others.

This is a very sturdy ball retriever. When fully extended it can reach a long ways but can be a little unwieldy. It is easy to use and grabs the ball easily though I did have a some trouble releasing the ball. The only downside is that it is a little heavy but I would definitely buy it again.
