does this operate as media reader, which one would expect, or is it just for firmware updates, which makes no sense but seems to be a standard feature of Vizio tv's

As a TV it's fine, although it takes longer to turn on than I'd like. The smart features are not very useful though. I can only really use Netflix and Youtube. There aren't many options for apps, mainly just some American local news channels and Yahoo stuff. It doesn't even have iHeartradio or Xu...

The quality for scaling isn't there..and Even on 4k videos, it just too slow. Is only great for still 4k picture and videos but as soon as you add motion to the videos is chaos.. if you want 4k for your vizio than I suggest to go for the P series, that's true 4k experience...this is just my opinion.
