This book could have been more accurately titled "The Papacy at Avignon" since the book more broadly covers the events dealing with the papacy at this time, rather than an in-depth look at the Avignon popes. A fine but unremarkable overview of the period during which the papacy was based at Avignon. Does the job, but oddly enough I found myself wanting more about the popes themselves and their administrations rather than the city.
