Historical detail is impressive, but the plot is both difficult to follow (especially with frequent shifts in narration) and strangely uninvolving. A real disappointment from a favorite author.

I liked Barron's Jane Austen mysteries for a while, but don't care for this protagonist, Irish barrister Patrick Fitzgerald. It's a Victorian novel, never my favorite period.
