They have a very smooth look and feel. I may have been able to size down, but I just pull them up above my natural waist to compensate for the length. I am 5'5 , so the length would be better for a taller woman.

I got these in the burgundy and they are really pretty; looks great with a tunic or longer sweater and boots. And they are thicker than I thought they would be, and don't snag; even when my cat tried to climb my leg! I got M/L and they fit great and wash and dry well.
