Firm but not hard. Has a little give in it but plenty of support. Just the right amount of padding. I tend to change positions a lot during the night because of arthritis in back, hips and shoulders. The note that came with this mattress is hilarious and at the same time serves its purpose in warning about the unraveling of the mattress. The Mattress needs a day or two to fully extend but its great. Doesn't seem as big as the picture but the measurements are listed on here so its fair.

I was leary about trying a foam mattress. I am glad I did. Love it. It's thick and soft. Way better than my old one. It was before comfort foam mattresses.
