I feel like this book is a very small piece of a very large thing - which, well, it is, being one part of a nineteen-book series. But I also feel like either it's a trivial part of that series or all will become clear later on. I'm hoping the latter.

I like Brust when he writes the first person, smart alecky point of view of his early character, Vlad Taltos. I find the 19th century style point of view of his other character in this world, Khaavren, a bit more of a strain, although I recognize that he's a good writer and it can be entertaining...
