The Girls in the Wild Fig Tree: How I Fought to Save Myself, My Sister, and Thousands of Girls Worldwide
This is a heartwarming true story of one girl's determination to change her community's traditions and create a better future for girls and women throughout Africa.
Nice Leng'ete was raised in a Maasai village in Kenya, where she witnessed the painful practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) that was meant to ensure marriageability and purity.
When her sister Soila submitted to the cut, Nice knew she had to act.
She postponed her own cutting, continued her education, and became the first in her family to attend college.
With the support of Amref, a non-profit organization, Nice used her visits home to set an example for what an uncut Maasai woman could achieve.
Her determination inspired other women in the village, and eventually, the elders saw the value of intact, educated girls as the way of the future.
The village has since ended FGM entirely, and Nice continues the fight to end FGM throughout Africa and the world.
This is a powerful reminder that one person can change the world - and every girl is worth saving.
