The globe is a healthy more like 8" round with a light sort of maple wood colored base, though it could be painted if one was unappy with that color as it is natural wood with no coating. Salt Crystal gives a warm glow and is an attractive night light. As for the health aspects, it is too early to tell. My wife enjoyed this as a Christmas Present that was out of the ordinary.

This Salt Rock Globe resembles a planet. The dimmer feature allows you to choose the amount of light. I thought that the sculptured rock might look fake, but that was not the case. It really looks like a planet, so it is different from the other salt rock lamps.

I am very pleased with my purchase. The glow that fills the room is amazing, as well as its other benefits. I purchased both the globe and another salt lamp at the same time, not knowing what to expect -- but, would not hesitate to recommend them highly.
