How did Breem make 2/3 of this novel almost boring? On this subject? Lots of telling, little showing. I have to agree with John257hopper. Want engaging historical fiction? Read Bernard Cornwell.

Thoughtful and interesting historical military fiction. Considered by some to be a classic in the genre. Definitely worth reading if you're interested in the later Roman empire.

If you like military history, you will like this. If you like Roman history, you will like this. If you are more interested in historical characters, in their psychology and personality, this might not be your historical novel. Too much military strategy and description of battles for my taste.
