The really long and drawn out story about how two implacable foes, part of a very long unending conflict, somehow develop a relationship. Sort of. The opponents are humans, not aliens, though after many centuries they have diverged in tiny ways. Some folks call this space opera, its not.

This was a long, deep sociological read about far flung interstellar nations embroiled in a war so deep and so entrenched that it became a deadly tradition that divided Humanity into two separate races.

Personally, I found this very complex. Friedman's style doesn't work for everyone though. An interesting look at motive and ambition.
