This is a period piece and in a strange way reminds of the Philo Vance mysteries. The Conjure-Man Dies is dated in a way that Dorothy Sayers and others of that time are not. That said, it is an interesting read with many unexpected twists and provides a glimpse of Harlem between the World Wars.

This book is still highly under-rated. It's one of the best American detective novels from the 20th century, and its one of the enduring works from the Harlem Renaissance. Archer, Dart, and Frimbo are terrific characters. The setting is Harlem during the Depression.
