The material is sturdy rip-stop, the pockets are great! the small exterior pockets on the left are the same size as the fifth pocket in a pair of jeans.

These shorts are really nice I like the extra pockets and the rip stop fabric. I ordered them a little bigger so if I gain some weight I don't have to struggle to get them on. I'd purchase them again!
