You have to be willing to give it time, especially in the first third or so, when Marías writes long, intricate, sentences that fold back on themselves, with parentheses within parentheses. Wonderful writing with delicious run on sentences strung like pearls on every page. Had to return it before I was done - would like to take it out again!
