Beautiful illustrations to a traditional song. I had to have this one special ordered at a large children's book store since it was not in stock - which surprised me. I am a huge Ezra Jack Keat's fan which may bias me, but I do think this is a classic.

I assumed he was just an apprentice shepherd or camel boy who had a little drum - Keats assumes that he has a full-size drum and implies his principal role in life is to drum. This is a wonderful book, no matter what you may think of the song it's based on.

The little boy wants to see baby Jesus but he doesn't know what to give him. He learns the best gift is him and his drums. The students will enjoy this book because its a song book. This book will probably remind the kids of Christmas time so it's best to read it during that time.
