I do not think I can open and close the vents - older air conditioners allowed you to open the vent to the outside and use fan settings to bring the cool air in from the outdoors. I have a pet grooming business and we use the a/c year round, 12-14 hours a day. The last one lasted about 11 months and was 6000BTU's. I am hoping this 8000BTU unit will run longer. It is quiet, easy to clean, easy to install and works well. I'll let you know for how long.
